What is HDD?
Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) is a trenchless method used for installing underground pipes, conduits, and cables in a shallow arc along a prescribed bore path by using a surface-launched drilling rig. This technique is widely used for the installation of utility lines (water, gas, electrical, telecommunications) beneath obstacles such as roads, rivers, and buildings.
Key Components of an HDD System
- Drill Rig: The primary machine used to perform the drilling operation. It provides the necessary force and rotation to the drill string.
- Drill Pipe: Hollow steel pipes that transmit drilling fluid, rotation, and push/pull force to the drill bit.

- Pullback: The product pipe or conduit is pulled back through the borehole from the exit to the entry point.
